Benedict Cumberbatch appeared in Hamlet at the Barbican Centre from 5 August 2015 to 31 October 2015. The production was directed by Olivier Award winning director Lyndsey Turner (Chimerica, Fathers & Sons) and set design was by the highly critically acclaimed Es Devlin (The Nether, Chimerica). Benedict was awarded best actor at the What’s on Stage Awards for his performance.
Joining Benedict in the cast was Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones, Rome, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) as Claudius, Anastasia Hille as Gertrude, Sian Brooke as Ophelia, Leo Bill as Horatio, Kobna Holdbrook Smith as Laertes and Jim Norton as Polonious.
The production sold out tickets for its entire run in 7 hours of them being made available to the public with eager attendees queuing for hours in the hopes of getting their hands on an elusive day ticket. The production was broadcast to cinemas worldwide as part of NT Live with an astonishing 225,000 people watching in 25 countries. It was the biggest cinema event opener of 2015.
