Benedict Cumberbatch to star in Melrose for Showtime/Sky Atlantic

Benedict Cumberbatch will be starring as Patrick Melrose in Melrose – a new 5 part series for Showtime and Sky Atlantic based on the novels by Edward St.Aubyn. David Nicholls will be writing all 5 episodes. Benedict will executive produce via his company SunnyMarch TV.

Melrose skewers the upper class as it tracks the protagonist’s harrowing odyssey from a deeply traumatic childhood through adult substance abuse and, ultimately, toward recovery. Cumberbatch’s Patrick Melrose is an aristocratic and outrageously funny playboy who struggles to overcome the damage inflicted by a horribly abusive father and the mother who tacitly condoned the behaviour. Each episode will follow one of the five novels, and take place over the course of a few intense days in the life of the protagonist. The settings range from the South of France in the 1960s to New York in the 1980s and Britain in the early 2000.

The limited series will begin shooting in New York, London and the South of France in August.

Benedict has mentioned wanting to appear in a series based on the novels for several years so it’s exciting to see his dream come true!

If you’d like to catch up with the novels you can buy the set on kindle on Amazon

Melrose is the second literary adaptation Benedict has signed up for recently. He will also be starring in The Child in Time based on the Ian McEwan book.

Benedict Cumberbatch to star in The Child in Time

Benedict Cumberbatch will be starring in a new TV movie for BBC 1 called The Child in Time based on the Ian McEwan novel. It will be a co-production for BBC between Masterpiece for BBC 1 and Pinewood Television and SunnyMarch TV (SunnyMarch being Benedict’s production company).

Benedict will star and executive produce the 90 minute film. Stephen Butchard (The Last Kingdom) will adapt the McEwan’s novel and Julian Farino (Ballers, Entourage) will direct.

The film will explore the dark territory of a marriage devastated by the loss of a child. Benedict will play children’s author Stephen Lewis, who must cope with the sudden loss of his daughter, Kate. Kate’s absence sets Stephen and his wife on diverging paths as both struggle with an all-consuming grief. With the passage of time, a balance of sorts returns, until hope surfaces and triumphs unexpectedly.

Benedict commented: “I read the novel years ago and it stayed with me — profound, beautiful, and very moving,” Cumberbatch said. “Only Ian McEwan could write about loss with such telling honesty.”

I’m thrilled to have my novel in the hands of such a high level creative team,” said McEwan. “I have fond memories of Benedict playing a brilliant and key part in the movie adaptation of ‘Atonement.’ Now, it’s a great honour to have this actor of such immense resource, experience and subtlety in the lead role of ‘The Child in Time.’”

If you’d like to read the novel you can buy it on Amazon here or in Kindle form.

Review of the Year

2016 has been it’s fair to say a bit of a mixed bag. With a combination of terrible world events and the somewhat unrelenting celebrity deaths which saw several of my heroes and the world’s biggest icons taken well before their time it’s a year I’ll be glad to see the back of! Still Cumberbatchweb went from strength to strength in 2016 and it was fun to take part in the Sherlocked event this year which saw me interviewing Sherlock’s composers Michael Price and David G Arnold as well as Benedict’s parents Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton.

Luckily for Benedict it was also another fantastic year for him personally!
