Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role has began previews at the Barbican Centre. It’s been quite the initial week for the production which has had to weather an unprecedented media frenzy (which saw papers break theatre etiquette by reviewing the first preview), an unexpected cast illness and technical hitches. Benedict also had to implore fans not to record the show after witnessing someone recording during his opening speech.
The show is attracting fans from all over the globe who are thrilled at the prospect of seeing Benedict and fans have been camping overnight in the hope of securing one of the 30 £10 day seats that are available.
We’ve been lucky enough to see the play (although we’ll review at a more appropriate time) and it’s a bold, breathtaking, sumptuously designed production which is by turn hugely witty and profoundly moving.
